On December 5, 2016, a Letter Regarding GTIIT's Formal Establishment Approved by the MOE has been issued by the MOE to Guangdong Provincial Government, indicating GTIIT is formally established under Guangdong Province Government's management according to relevant laws.

Located in Shantou, Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT), which is set up jointly by Shantou University (STU) and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology (the Technion), is a sino-foreign institution with independent legal personality and the first to introduce high-quality higher education resources from?Israel. Mr. Li Jiange, well-known economist and Chairman of Sun Yefang Economic Science Foundation, serves as Chancellor of GTIIT and Professor Aaron Ciechanover, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry (2004), serves as Executive Vice Chancellor. ?

GTIIT is a beneficial attempt in establishing a high-level sino-foreign institution, whose preparation and establishment have been greatly supported by Guangdong Provincial Government, Shantou Municipal Government, and Li Ka-shing Foundation. GTIIT aims to be a world-recognized high-level research university in education, scientific research, and innovation, with its focus on education innovation, introduction of high-quality education resources fromIsrael, and development of scientific and technological talents with innovation ability, global perspective, as well as humanities quality. It will also commit to the creation and application of new knowledge and technology to boost the economic and social development.

As is planned, GTIIT will introduce the "Knowledge Triangle" pattern from the Technion, attaching importance to the synergetic advantages produced by education, research, and innovation. GTIIT will also build a technological development engine and incubators, and provide support for the ecosystem of social innovation and entrepreneurship. ??

Start of Undergraduate Admissions in 2017

2,960 students are planned to be recruited in the initial phase (2017-2026), including 2,660 undergraduates and 300 postgraduates. In the long term, the number will be up to 5,000 students.

Given that professional talents in chemistry, materials, environment, energy, and food security are required for Guangdong economic development, three programs ¨C Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Food Engineering, and Materials Engineering ¨C will be provided for 300 students (100 students / program) in 2017.

In addition, GTIIT shall progressively carry out the master and doctoral programs by learning from the Technion's advanced experiences in the way of independent?admissions according to the Regulations on Chinese-foreign Cooperation in Running School. ?Masters?and?PhD?degree certificates will be issued by the Technion.

Over 60% faculty from the Technion

GTIIT's faculty shall all have doctor's degree from overseas top universities. Besides faculty deployed by the Technion, GTIIT will also recruit excellent faculty globally under the same standards adopted in Technion in order to establish a world-class teaching team. So far, there have been more than 1,000 applicants, 40 of whom have been approved by the Technion Selection Committee. All of them are experts/scholars with doctorate degree from top universities and teaching experience in renowned universities.

Delivery of the North Campus in March, 2017

The construction of GTIIT is invested by Guangdong Provincial Government and Shantou Municipal Government. GTIIT is located on both the north and south side of Daxue Road, whose construction is divided into two phases. It covers a total area of 623.45 mu, including 102.85 mu for the North Campus and 520.6 mu for the South Campus ¨C the main campus of GTIIT.

The building area in the North Campus is 10.17©O?and the total investment is RMB 738 million. The construction of the buildings started in September, 2015, including Research Building, Teaching Laboratories, Administration Building, Education Building, Visitors & Innovation ?Center, Canteen, Student Dorm (ABCD), Staff Dorm, and supporting facilities. All buildings were roofed at the end of October, 2016. Presently, Living Area and Research & Teaching Area are under interior decoration and equipment installation. The North Campus is scheduled to be delivered to use in March, 2017.

The South Campus is located at the south of Daxue Road and the buildings include Education Building, Research Building, Administration Building, Library, Academic Exchange Center, Student Dorms, Staff Dorms, Canteen, Arena, supporting rooms, Innovation and R&D Center, etc. Campus landscape, a pedestrian overpass, campus roads, and pipes are also included. The construction of the west section of Xueyuan North Road (part of the construction of the South Campus) has started at the end of October this year.
