The formal establishment of Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) is great news for educational circles in Shantou, Guangdong, and even China, which is another significant achievement in introducing foreign top universities to Guangdong and improving the level of international education. On December 7, Chen Liangxian, Municipal Part Committee Secretary, met with Chancellor Li Jiang and other related staff in Yingbin Restaurant and had an in-depth exchange of views on the issues of construction, student recruitment, education, research, and schooling environment.

Chen Liangxian extended his congratulations on the formal establishment of GTIIT and expressed his sincere appreciation for the efforts made by Chancellor Li Jiange as well as other related people, which is followed by an introduction of the current economic development in Shantou. He pointed out that according to the 11^th Municipal Congress of Party Representatives, Shantou is presently formulating development ideas reflecting hard work, responsibility, courage, initiative, and overall development, aiming to establish a civilized city, create a legal, international and convenient business environment, and accelerate the establishment of key city in Eastern Guangdong. So far, there has been resumption of confidence, Chaoshan businessmen, image, and spirit & efficiency of special economic zone. Recently, Shantou has attracted an increasing number of enterprises from home and abroad together with a series of high-tech projects, which creates a favorable environment for the schooling of GTIIT and the industry-university-research cooperation.

Chen Liangxian pointed out that the formal establishment of GTIIT is of great importance to the development of Shantou. Shantou is now facing great strategic opportunities as GTIIT, an education base for high-tech talents and a source of innovation and entrepreneurship, is supplementary to the future trend of development in Shantou. We hope GTIIT will be the catalyst of innovation and entrepreneurship and attract more top science & research talents and businesses to Shantou. Both Municipal Party Committee and Government attach great importance to the joint venture established by the Technion and STU and will continue to provide support and excellent services for GTIIT, especially in establishing an international school and living community for the faculty and staff, improving both hardware and software equipment in GTIIT, creating an international and convenient environment for student recruitment, education, and faculty's life.

Chancellor Li Jiange expressed his admiration for the Party Committee and Government¡¯s development ideas on the overall revitalization of Shantou and said that Shantou is experiencing a big change due to the recent work on establishing a civilized city, which has enhanced the confidence and determination in the development of GTIIT. With GTIIT¡¯s formal establishment as a new start, we should accelerate the introduction of foreign excellent faculty, strengthen the team building, get well prepared for next year¡¯s student recruitment, and promote the establishment of China-Israel Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone. Our goal is to establish GTIIT as an internationally recognized high-level research institute in education, research, and innovation so that more youngsters will have access to cutting-edge education of science and engineering without going abroad.
