Chen Liangxian, Shantou Party Secretary, met with Perez Lavie, Chairman of GTIIT Board & President of the Technion, in Shantou Yingbin Restaurant on December 9. Both sides had a friendly exchange of views on the promotion of establishing GTIIT as a top science institute, in the presence of Municipal officers Qiu Yihui and Lin Yimin, Provost of Shantou University, Gu Peihua, and Vice Chancellor & Director General of GTIIT, Moshe Marom.

On behalf of Shantou Government and Part Committee, Chen Liangxian extended his warm welcome to President Lavie and expressed his appreciation and admiration for President Lavie' efforts and achievements in establishing GTIIT, as well as making a brief introduction on the social and economic development of Shantou. Chen Liangcian pointed out that Israel is famous for innovation globally and the Technion, enjoying the good reputation of "Israel MIT", is a world-renowned institute of science and engineering, especially in its fundamental structure, soil irrigation, electronic technology, and military industry. The success of Israel and the Technion fully presents Jewish people's talent and hard work. GTIIT is a significant achievement of introducing foreign high-level universities and improving international education. It is the first China-foreign institution with independent legal personality to introduce high-quality higher education resources from Israel, which is of great importance to deepen the China ¨C Israel cooperation in technology, education, and culture.

The success of GTIIT formal establishment mainly results from the Chinese and Israeli leaderships' concern, Li Ka-shing Foundation's promotion and President Lavie's support. With different parts' joint efforts, GTIIT will definitely be established as a world-recognized high-level research university with excellent international education resources and talents in innovation.

Chen Liangxian said Shantou, a famous hometown of Chinese overseas and one of the first Special Economic Zones, has been facing great strategic opportunities and huge space for development. The current Shantou is in greater need of talents and innovation than ever before. ?GTIIT, an education base for high-tech talents and a source of innovation and entrepreneurship, is supplementary to the establishment of Local Area Science and Education Innovation Center and the goal of accelerating overall development. We hope GTIIT will be the catalyst of innovation and entrepreneurship and attract more top science & research talents and businesses to Shantou so as to promote the development of technology and innovation in Shantou.

Chen Liangxian stressed that the formal establishment of GTIIT relies on the efforts made by all parts. The Party Committee and Municipal Government have obtained obvious achievements in traffic, environment, management, platforms, and civilized city establishment. Since this year, Shantou¡¯s economy has developed well and attracted famous enterprises from home and abroad together with a series of high-tech projects, which creates a favorable environment for the schooling of GTIIT and the industry-university-research cooperation.

Chen Liangxian explained that the joint efforts made by the Technion and STU in establishing GTIIT have expanded and deepened Shantou-Israel cooperation. The Party Committee and Municipal Government will fully support GTIIT by providing an international and convenient environment for working and living. He hoped President Lavie continues to promote the introduction of world-class faculty and the Technion¡¯s education pattern and philosophy, and develop more talents for Guangdong, China, and even the world.

Lavie expressed his excitement about coming to Shantou at such an important moment of GTIIT's formal establishment and felt at home in Shantou, Guangdong. GTIIT formal establishment is impossible without the full support of Provincial and Municial Party Committee and Governemnt or the close partnership between both sides. A journey of one thousand miles begins with one step. The first step is very successful and his goal is to turn Shantou into a globally influential city of innovation and develop GTIIT as an international top institute of science and engineering through the cooperation between GTIIT and STU.
