GTIIT Pro-Vice Chancellor Moshe Marom:
Transplanting innovative spirit of Israel to Guangdong
?
Nanfang Daily: Since the establishment of GTIIT, it has gained extensive attention from the society. It is regarded as an important educational cooperation between China and Israel. What features do this institute have?
?
Moshe Marom: We are dedicated to establishing GTIIT as a research university with excellent abilities of education, scientific research and innovation recognized by the world. We will conduct educational and teaching innovation and cultivate excellent engineers and scientists with innovative ability, global vision and humanity.
?
Talking about features, I think GTIIT is a unique university. First of all, it is not a comprehensive university. There is no school of arts and science, no law school and even no business school. We focus on cultivating world-leading engineers and technicians. Second, GTIIT is a cooperative program between Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and Shantou University. Technion is a top university in the world, which will bring great help to the development of GTIIT; Shantou University advocates liberal education, which has complementary advantages. In addition, GTIIT is located in Shantou that is a city with big changes and great potential.
?
Nanfang Daily: What kinds of educational breakthrough will have in GTIIT?
?
Moshe Marom: We respect the cultural tradition and educational wisdom lasting over one thousand years in China. In today’s innovation-driven society that changes constantly, We hope that GTIIT will bring different educational philosophy and methods and encourage college students in China to be brave in making mistakes, thinking out of the conventional box to innovate and create. You know, the spirit of focusing on innovation has been integrated in the blood of Israelis. Now we hope that we can bring this kind of creative thinking to Guangdong and integrate it in the educational model of GTIIT.
?
We plan to work hard on the fields of engineering, science and life science. We have considered the requirements of globalization and development of industrialization. Also, These fields are closely related to the dominant disciplines of Technion. We will focus on innovation and exploration in environment, new clean energy and human health.
Nanfang Daily: How does GTIIT cultivate student's innovation ability?
?
Moshe Marom: Currently, we are working hard in the construction of GTIIT North Campus. We are also planning South Campus which is five times larger than the area of North Campus. In South Campus, there will be an incubation center with a purpose to help researchers and students to set up laboratories and achieve industrialization gradually. That is to say, students can conduct innovative research as much as they like. They should have adequate facilities in teaching? laboratories and later in incubators.
?
Besides innovative research, GTIIT also pay attention to internship. "Sino-Israel Innovation and Industrial Park" will be set up besides South Campus to attract high-tech startups and industry groups to settle down here. This will provide opportunities for students to get in touch with real high technology. Through their internship here, students will improve their practical abilities and lay solid foundation in their innovative future.
