Recent research studies have found that animal cells also have tactile sense – they can respond to the environment with forces.?
In the afternoon of May 10th, Assistant Professor Xu Xinpeng from Gungdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology gave a lecture on Animal Cells Can Use Physical Forces for Communications in Guangzhou True Light Middle School. Professor Xu vividly illustrated why forces was important in physiological process: 1. cardiac muscle cells can achieve synchronous beating with other cells through forces, 2. differentiation direction of stem cells can be determined by the hardness of environment, 3. the regeneration of hydras from tissue and multicellular spheroids requires the forces within cells.

Dr. Xinpeng Xu graduated at Physics in Wuhan University in 2008. Four years later, he received his doctoral degree at Philosophy in Nano Science and Technology in Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He is currently studying his postdoctoral programs in Israel's Weizmann Institute of Science and he will be a teacher in GTIIT in the coming semester. Dr. Xu conducts thorough research in biophysics, statistic mechanics and applied mathematics. He is fruitful in investigating systematic structures, phase state behaviors, dynamics like liquid drops, hydrogel, biological cell and other structures with statistic thermodynamics. His articles were published in Nature Physics.

Guangdong Technion Israel Institute of Technology is the first Sino-Israeli polytechnic university introducing quality educational resources from Israel. Its construction has been fully supported by Guangdong government, Shantou government and Li Ka-Shing Foundation. The enrollment of GTIIT will start this year, and the undergraduate programs are Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Food Engineering, and Materials Engineering.
