It has been three weeks since the preparation period started. Have our students adapted the lives in GTIIT? Guo from Biotechnology and Food Engineering and Zhang from Materials Engineering shared their experience with us.

Q: How do you feel about your lives here?
Zhang: Fulfilled, every day is fulfilled, but also stressful since we have enormous amount of homework. We would go to the library in Shantou University(STU) after classes every day. The library in STU is top-notch among its kind, with beautiful environment and tense learning atmosphere. What stresses us most is our English-delivering courses, because we couldn't understand the technical terms at the beginning. But our teachers are very nice, they answered our questions whenever we asked them. Today, our class schedule in autumn semester was released – we have a very tight schedule. Therefore, we joked GTIIT as GTIIT High School. But tight schedule, strict teacher and more time to study are good, for we can learn more.

Q: Have you adapted to the lives in GTIIT?
Guo: I have got used to the lives here now. I feel good about it. Though both of us are not from Guangdong province – I come from Hebei and Zhang is from Sichuan, we studied in boarding high schools which were far away from home, we had learnt to be independent long ago. On the other hand, GTIIT has good infrastructure, our dorms and canteen are much better than those universities in northern China, needless to say our teachers – they care us a lot. For food, I has adapted the food here since I ate light favor food at home, while Zhang hasn’t got used to the food here since he loves spicy food.

Q:? What are the differences between university lives and high school lives?
Zhang: Tiring, both are tiring, but for different reasons. In high school, we need to study day in and day out, while in university, we not just need to study but also need to learn how to play, how to interact with other and comprehend lives in deeper levels. In GTIIT, we can also experience different cultures.

Q: Why you choose GTIIT?
Guo: To be honest, GTIIT is a new university. Many people in my hometown know nothing about GTIIT. Choosing GTIIT need to be bold. I discovered GTIIT on the college enrollment handbook. At first, I wanted to go to Shantou University, but STU didn't enroll students in Hebei. Later, I knew that GTIIT is co-established by STU and Technion. I felt it must be good. Now time proves that my choice is correct.

Zhang: My situation is different from Zhang's. My parents wanted me to receive foreign education at the very beginning, therefore, they always keep an eye on Sino-foreign university. My father is clear that Israeli are smart and rigorous, and Technion is a world-renowned university. In addition, considering that GTIIT is supported by Li Ka-Shing Foundation, my father suggested me to apply to GTIIT.

Q: How do you feel about the teachers here?
Zhang: Our Israeli teachers are indeed rigorous and considerate. They care us a lot. David Agmon, our physics teacher is a legendary figure. He used to work in a corporation and later went back to teach, which is his favorite thing to do. He is responsible and serious. He wrote a textbook, and prepared demonstration materials with his own hands.

Q: I heard that you just took your mid-term English examination a few days ago, how do you feel about it?
Zhang: Our test is mainly from scientific essay. Compared with the English reading test we did ?in high school, our English mid-term test has longer essay with more unfamiliar vocabulary, yet we can bring dictionaries with us. English tests in high school reflects Chinese mentality, while our mid-term English test shows how foreigners are thinking.

Guo: Our mid-term English test focus on details, especially how much you have understood the context.

Q: How often do you phone to your families? Are they satisfied with your lives in GTIIT?
Zhang: My families are concerned about me. They phoned me every day. They are satisfied with GTIIT's conditions right from the first day. Now they also satisfied.

Guo: I phoned to my families twice a week, My families think that GTIIT is much better than expected. They are even impressed.

Q: You are so optimistic; do you have something to worry about?
Guo: Yes. I feel stressful about my study. I heard that Technion had a high failing rate. Since GTIIT has the same teaching model with that of Technion. I fear failing my exams and therefore cannot get my diplomas.

Zhang: To be honest, I have kept an eye on other Sino-foreign universities, their failing rate is scaring. But I have prepared for the worst results before I came here. Universities overseas are tolerant to applicants but strict to their students. I believe I can learn a lot in four years. Therefore, I am looking forward to the coming university lives.
