Sima Yaron is the Head of Biotechnology and Food Engineering Department in GTIIT, the professor at the Department of Biotechnology and Food Engineering at the Technion, and the head of the laboratory of Molecular Microbiology of Food-Borne Pathogens. Prof. Yaron served as Vice Dean for undergraduate studies of the Technion, member of the Board of GRAND Water Institute, member of the Israeli National Security Council of "Bioterrorism in the Age of Terrorism", and departmental coordinator of undergraduate studies.

Why did you make this artwork of GTIIT logo?

On the one hand, making mosaic, a traditional art in Israel, is my hobby. On the other hand, I want to do something that connects Israel and China, so I would like to make the mosaic. The things that I like this symbol is the connection among Technion, Shantou and Shantou University*. I regard Technion as my second family – I studied in the Technion, where I received my first degree and my Ph.D., then I did my postdoc. in the U.S., and I got a position in the Technion…… So GTIIT is like our small baby. We want it to develop, to grow, to flourish, and to be like the Technion.

*The GTIIT logo represents the cultural origins of each of the partners, as well as their harmonious collaboration. The Hebrew letter "Tet" represents Technion, the red flower stands for Shantou, and the phoenix for Shantou University.

What kind of materials you used and how long have you spent on completing the artwork?

These stones are from soil in Israel. Initially, I wanted to use stones from Shantou, but I couldn't get them. I chose them because of their colors. I started to make the mosaic in July and since I only do it in my spare time, like weekends, it took four months to complete the artwork. My husband helped me to make a frame for it,which took a month. After finishing it, I brought it to Technion, and Technion sent it by plane.

When will you come to teach in GTIIT? What subjects will you teach in GTIIT?

I teach microbiology which is open to the sophomore and junior students, so maybe I would teach here in the second or the third year. And my children are in the army now, I hope to see them at weekend when they come home, so I plan to come to GTIIT after they finish their service.

I talked to students when I came to Shantou last time. In a lecture for students in the program, I explain to them about the program, what they need to do, how we expect them to study, etc. I tell them a nice story. I showed them the picture and asked them, “what do you see here?” “You see eggs, carrots, and coffee beans. Now what happens to them if we put them in hot water? The eggs became solid and strong, the carrots became soft and what about the coffee beans? Coffee beans remain the same but changed the color of the water.” I told the students, this is going to be our choice in the coming four years, to change the outside environment instead of the opposite. At the end of the lecture, I showed them a picture of Technion students doing experiments in labs, and I said I hoped to see them doing experiments in labs next year.
