To echo the mission, China has been celebrating the National Intellectual Property Week from April 20th?to 26th?every year. The National IP Week this year themes on promoting innovation culture and respecting intellectual property rights.
?
What is Intellectual Property?
Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce.
?
IP is protected in law by, for example, patents, copyright and trademarks, which enable people to earn recognition or financial benefit from what they invent or create. By striking the right balance between the interests of innovators and the wider public interest, the IP system aims to foster an environment in which creativity and innovation can flourish.

?
【Key points】IP protection concerning university students often refers to patents, publications, ideas, brand building (trademark and business plan) and technology.
?
Why university students should be concerned about IP protection?
?
In the trends of innovation and entrepreneurship, many university students or graduates are infectious to IP invasions or infringing others' IP at the beginning of their entrepreneurship.
?
Knowledge is the core of entrepreneurship for university students, requiring the synchronization between the awareness of IP protection and the development of innovation and entrepreneurship.
?
Why the IP rights of university students is so vulnerable?
?
First, enterprises started by university students can barely compete with large enterprises, since they are mostly knowledge-based with insufficient funds. Second, the cost of protecting IP, or patents, are high, taking a lot of time and efforts with small compensation, which encourages the infringers to be more arrogant. Third, university students aren't aware of the seriousness of infringement in time, adding more obstacles to right protection in turn.
?
【Key points】Students shall be aware of right protection, keep an close eye to national rules and regulations and protect legitimate interests timely.
?
What are the key measures undertaken this year?
?
It is reported that the key measures undertaken this year include:
1.??? Introduce punitive compensation, raise the celling of compensation and promote the revision of Patent Law;
2.??? Further develop the protection systems for IP and mobilize forces of supervision, administration, judiciary and arbitration.
3.??? Build a batch of IP protection centers to make the right protection procedure more convenient, efficient and low-cost.
