Chen Hesheng, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, ?General Commander of Spallation Neutron Source.and Director of National Laboratory of Beijing Electron-Positron Collider, visited GTIIT yesterday, during which Chen gave a lecture on spallation neutron source at GTIIT Auditorium and held a panel discussion with GTIIT faculty representatives.

According to Prof. Chen, spallation neutron source can accelerate protons before smashing them into a target to produce neutrons. The neutrons are then sent to numerous instruments that are used by researchers to study materials.

Over the years, neutron scattering has made great contributions to many areas of physics, chemistry, biology, materials science and materials engineering, where applications range from consumer goods to photovoltaic materials and drug delivery. Since building spallation neutron sources can be technically complex and expensive, there are only four in operation, in the United States, the UK, Japan and Dongguan, China. The one built in China is known as China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), which is the nation's first research facility providing the most intense pulsed neutron beams for scientific research. Construction of the CSNS project in China started in 2011 under the direction of IHEP, with a budget of 2.3 billion yuan (364 million U.S. dollars).

In the panel discussion, Prof. Chen met with the representatives of GTIIT management and the faculty. Both sides expressed the hope that the two units could build a substantial cooperative relationship so that more researchers could use CSNS to carry out research projects.
